Edmeston boys win T-V championship

Josh Martin threw 12 strikeouts to lead Edmeston to the Tri-Valley title for for the second straight year with a 9-1 win over Morris.

Derek Bowen led off the first inning with a double to get the Panthers off to a hot start. Martin connected on an RBI single just before teammate Justin Nicolosi hit a double to drive in two runs. Luke Ough hit one of his two singles to drive in the final run in the first inning to put Edmeston in command with a 4-0 lead at the end of the first.

Cam Best hit a double for Morris, which answered with a run in the top of the second but couldn’t mount a comeback.

“We came out early and scored four runs in the first and were able to stay in control,” said Edmeston coach Mike Clark, whose team scored five more runs in the second half of the game to secure the victory.

Martin went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored, while Ough finished 2-for-2 at the plate with two RBIs for the Panthers.

Edmeston (11-0) awaits sectional play, which begins Friday.

STAC Semifinals

Vestal 8, Oneonta 2

Dom Dirado finished with eight strikeouts as Vestal picked up a Southern Tier Athletic Conference Semifinal win over Oneonta at Maine-Endwell.

Owen Dando hit a key double in the fourth inning for Vestal, which scored four runs to take a 4-0 lead going into the fifth inning. Dando finished with three hits and two doubles in the victory for the Golden Bears, who received a triple from Matt MacAllister.

Teddy McGraw finished with a triple for Oneonta High, which scored two runs in the sixth, but couldn’t close the gap.

The Yellowjackets (13-5) will travel to Christian Brothers Academy for a non-league game at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Editor’s Note: Cooperstown’s home baseball game against Frankfort-Schuyler was postpooned, and will be played Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.

SOFTBALL

Edmeston 14, Laurens 1

Catherine Johnson struck out 10 and walked none and Katie Gott went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead Edmeston to the Tri-Valley League championship over Laurens.

Gott also had three RBIs, and Sarah Lawrence hit an RBI single in the first inning and scored two runs for the Panthers. Edmeston, which is off until sectionals, scored six runs in the fifth.

Kayla Johnson hit a triple in the sixth and then scored off an RBI triple by Alexa Evans for Laurens, which is also off until sectionals.

TENNIS

Cooperstown 5, Poland 0

Will Weldmon, John Kelly and Noah Lifgren earned single match victories to lead visiting Cooperstown to a Center State Conference win over Poland on Monday.

The Hawkeyes (11-0) clinched their seventh Center State Conference title, and also won two doubles matches. They visit SUNY Cortland for sectionals at 10 a.m. Wednesday.
