Tigers overcome Yellowjackets in fourth quarter

CHERYL CLOUGH Oneonta point guard Graham Wooden drives against Union-Endicott defender Isaiah Fullard during Saturday's home loss to the Tigers.

Union-Endicott came back to defeat Oneonta, 62-59, in boys basketball action Saturday morning at Oneonta High School.

The Tigers trailed going into each quarter, including an 11-point deficit at the half and an eight-point, 44-36, mark through three quarters, but built a 26-15 run in the fourth to win. The Tigers were led by Anthony VanFosen's 17 points, one off a 3-pointer, and 4-for-5 shooting day from the free throw line.

Matt Polemeni had nine points, all off of 3-pointers, and Steele Hammee added eight points from a 6-for-6 showing on the free throw line.

Oneonta head coach Jerry Mackey said his team played “great and with such intensity” and that the loss falls back on him.

“I made some poor defensive choices in the second half and called for some offensive sets that didn't allow our momentum to keep going,” he said. So, I owned that part of it in the locker room, apologized to the guys and we move on and get ready for Susquehanna Valley.”

Tanner Beang led the Yellowjackets' offense, scoring a game-high 20 that included five of the team's 10 3-pointers. Graham Wooden scored 15 points, including a 3-pointer, and Evan Sitts scored eight with two 3-pointers.

Each team made 10 shots from behind the arc. Union-Endicott was 12-for-16 from the free throw line and Oneonta was 7-for-12.

Oneonta will play Susquehanna Valley in a Southern Tier Athletic Conference match-up Thursday, Jan. 4 at home. Varsity will start around 7:15 p.m.
