Laurens advances with 20-9 victory

Second-seeded Laurens took care of business Friday, cruising into the Section IV Class D softball tournament quarterfinals with a 20-9 win over No. 15 Milford in Laurens. 

"We focused for seven innings and played well," Laurens (14-2) head coach Andy Carr said. "Offensively, we hit the ball well tonight." 

The Leopards had 17 hits and a plethora of multiple hitters. They scored four runs in the first, and added five in the second for a 9-1 lead. 

Laurens answered with two runs in the third and it stayed 9-3 until the fourth, when Laurens pushed five runs across. It added two in the fifth and four in the sixth. 

Hayley Martin hit 5-for-5 with four runs scored and five RBIs. She had a double, as did Sierra Johnson. Johnson hit 3-for-5. 

Catcher Alexa Evans was 3-for-3 and scored five times. Ashely Wikoff hit 3-for-5 with three RBIs and Rhia Beers hit 2-for-5 with two RBIs. Karly Barra was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. 

"Hopefully we didn't use up all our hits tonight," Carr said. 

Rachelle Soucia threw the win, striking out eight and walking four while allowing six hits. 

Rebekha Oliver had two RBIs for Morris and Adriana Sperry was 2-for-4 with one RBI. 

Laurens will host No. 7 Hancock (8-6) on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.

Hancock also won big in the first round, defeating Milford 15-0. The Midstate Athletic Conference member is used to playing strong competition in Deposit, Afton and Bainbridge-Guilford. 

"Those teams are all top notch teams down there so we have our work cut out for us on Tuesday," Carr said. 

No. 6 Schenevus advanced to play No. 3 Marathon on the same side of the bracket. On the other side, No. 1 Deposit will host No. 8 Afton and No. 4 Gilboa-Conesville will host No. 12 Davenport. 

All games are scheduled for Tuesday.
