Big smallmouth leads to SBA victory

Bruce Hall and Vince Fink won the Susquehanna Bass Association's Blake Equipment Open Bass Tournament on July 22 on Oneida Lake.

Fink contributed the big smallmouth of the day (2.91 pounds) to the team's winning five-fish total of 13.17 pounds.

Frank Microni and Steve Llewellyn placed second with five fish weighing 11.79 pounds.

Although they caught four fish, Gary Edwards and John Burnside took third at 11.66 pounds.

Lou Falvo and Anthony Konchar rounded out the top four with an 11.49-pound total for five fish. Their catches included Konchar's 3.52-pound largemouth that marked the lunker of the day.

The SBA will host the Steven's Hardware Open on Aug. 5 on Goodyear Lake, followed by the City of Oneonta's 55th annual Fishing Derby for youths ages 5-15 at 4 p.m. Aug. 11 at Hodges Pond in Neahwa Park.

Basketball clinic set for Aug. 4

The Clark Sports Center will host a basketball clinic from 9 a.m.-noon Aug. 4 for students entering grades 2-8 this fall.

Cost is $15 for CSC members and $30 for non-members. Veteran high school coach Charlie Hage will run the clinic with the help of CSC counselors, college and high school players.

Tennis tournament starts Aug. 6

The 33rd annual Volkswagen Open Tennis Tournament runs Aug. 6-10 at the George R. Waddington Tennis Courts in Oneonta's Wilber Park.

The single-elimination tournament will feature play in men's singles and doubles, women's singles and doubles, and mixed doubles.

Entry forms are available online at and at the Brenner Recreation Building in Neahwa Park. Tournament registration fee is $10 and covers entry in all eligible divisions. Entry deadline is 5 p.m. Thursday. Entries must be accompanied with payment (check or money order only) made out to the City of Oneonta.

Polar Bear 5K slated for Aug. 18

The Goodyear Lake Polar Bear 5K Walk/Run will begin at 10:15 a.m. Aug. 18 on Krol Field in Milford.

Registration runs from 8:30-10 a.m. Aug. 18. Entry fee is $20. Proceeds benefit the Goodyear Lake Polar Bear Jump.

Seward, Leiter to appear at Outlaws game

Senator Jim Seward, former New York Mets pitcher Al Leiter and Oneonta Mayor Dick Miller will take part in the Mayor's Cup Trophy presentation before the Oneonta Outlaws Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League game Sunday at Damaschke Field.

The ceremony will take place moments before the Outlaws host the Cooperstown Hawkeyes at 5 p.m. Sunday. Leiter will throw out the first pitch.

Oneonta clinched the 2012 title in its Mayor's Cup series against Cooperstown with a 3-2 home victory in 10 innings July 19. The win gave Oneonta a 6-2 lead with three games to play in the series.

The Outlaws went on to beat the Hawkeyes, 13-3, on Sunday at Damaschke Field. They'll close the series with back-to-back games Sunday at Damaschke Field and Monday at Doubleday Field in Cooperstown.

The PGCBL regular season ends Aug. 1, with playoffs to follow Aug. 3-9.

Soccer series continues Monday

The Headwaters Soccer Club is accepting registrations for its summer camps, which are for boys and girls ages 7-17. Team camps also are available.

Cost to attend is $60 per week, which includes a T-shirt and a water bottle for each participant. Area coaches and players will conduct the camps, which run from 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The Audi Oneonta-N.Y. Power Authority Camp runs Monday through Friday at Mine Kill State Park.

The camp series closes with the WELL-Wightman Specialty Woods Camp at Oneonta State (Aug. 6-10).

O-State soccer camp starts Monday

The Oneonta State men's soccer team will host its 37th annual summer soccer camps from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Wright National Soccer Campus in Oneonta.

Head coach Iain Byrne, his staff and players will run the Dragon Camp (ages 6-14) and the Elite Camp (high school players only) for boys and girls.

Cost is $125, with a $10 discount for additional family members. The camps offer free supervision from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. each day.

Soccer club to hold camp next week

The Cooperstown Soccer Club and Challenger Sports will host a British Soccer camp from Monday through Friday at the Elementary School Fields in Cooperstown.

Youths will be coached by a member of Challenger's British coaching staff and receive a camp T-shirt, a soccer ball, a soccer poster, an individual skills performance evaluation and free access to an educational soccer website.
