Oneonta State senior Sean Bernstein had the fastest time in the 200-meter preliminaries and helped the Red Dragons’ 400 relay team to a school record during the first day of the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

Bernstein, the defending D-III champion in the 200, ran his season-best time of 20.87 seconds in the prelim. It was just off his school-record 20.80 he ran to win last year’s 200 at nationals. Bernstein’s teammate, freshman Joe Carr, just missed qualifying for the finals. He finished ninth in 21.56.

The 200 final is scheduled for 6:20 p.m. Saturday.

Bernstein joined freshmen Tom Wheeler, Carr and Jake Alviene on the relay that finished in 41.01, the second-fastest time in qualifying. O-State came into the event seeded sixth with a seed time of 41.22, which had been the school record.

The 400 relay final will be held at 3:40 p.m. Saturday.

Bernstein will run in the 100 preliminary at 7:50 p.m. tonight. He’s seeded second for the event and finished runner-up in the event last season. His seed time is a school record 10.32.
