A day after John Mikolaicyk hit two home runs for the Green Wave in a loss to Vestal on Tuesday, the RIT sophomore led the Green Wave to a 4-2 win over Binghamton Post 1645 by pitching a complete game.
"John pitched a really good game," Oneonta head coach Mike Jester said. "He has got a good fastball in the mid to upper 80s and commanded the zone all night with the fastball and off-speed stuff. He's really learned how to pitch in the last year."
Mikolaicyk walked two and struck out ten. He started the game with six straight shutout innings before allowing two runs in the seventh.
He also contributed at the plate, driving in two runs and hitting a double.
Jester said that Mikolaicyk has been a huge part of the Green Wave's early-season success as they deal with injuries to key players.
"In all facets of the game has put the team on his back," the Oneonta coach said. "When he's not pitching he's playing shortstop, and he hasn't done much of that in his career but he's playing it well. He's been great as we try and get healthy."
Mikoliacyk's first RBI came in the first inning as a sacrifice fly scored Tanner Beang after Beang's leadoff single to start the game. Mikolaicyk knocked in another run in the third, doubling home Cameron Neer to make it 2-0.
With Oneonta still holding a 2-0 lead in the sixth, Ryan Packard led off the inning with a walk. Caden Clow followed with a two-run home run to score Packard and extend the Green Wave advantage to four.
"John pretty much dominated, but we were just a mistake away from being behind as the game went on so that was a big home run from Caden," Jester said. "He hit it to left-center field and it probably went 375-380 feet."
Beang finished with two hits, the team's only multiple hitter.
Oneonta (5-4, 2-1) hosts the 22nd annual Green Wave Wood Bat Classic this weekend. The tournament, which is sponsored by the 6th Ward Athletic Club, begins Friday and finishes play on Sunday.
Oneonta's first game is against the Clinton County Mariners at Damaschke Field Friday at 8 p.m.
