Oneonta High struggled against a diamond-and-one defense and lost its first Southern Tier Athletic Conference girls basketball game of the season, 45-41, at Owego on Tuesday.

"I was certainly disappointed with the performance we put forth," Yellowjackets coach Matt Miller said. "They used a diamond-and-one against Mariah (Ruff). That's what we prepared for all week long, but we didn't do a good job executing our sets. I could have done a much better job adjusting during the game, but they definitely had a plan for us and it worked."

Ruff, a sophomore, leads the Yellowjackets in scoring. She was held to eight points. Kelsey Baker had a team-high 11 points, despite shooting 1-for-8 from the free throw line. Hayley Dower contributed six for OHS.

Miller said his team took a lead briefly in the fourth quarter with about two minutes left.

But then Jill Silvanic hit both of three-pointers, the first giving the Indians a one-point lead the second extending their lead to four.

"We lost her a couple of times," Miller said of Silvanic, who shared game-high scoring honors at 13 with 6-foot-3 teammate Rachel Merrill. "We talked about not doubling off of her, but we did a couple times and she made us pay."

Miller said other players besides Ruff need to be more aggressive on offense.

"We got some really good looks," he said. "Our best looks were we got the ball out of Mariah's hands. We have kids who can make shots, but we've got to take those shots. We still have a bunch of girls who are trigger shy. Some of those kids need to see the ball go through the net."

Oneonta (7-3, 5-1) will be tested again Friday when they host Norwich.

"We'll have to play well," he said.
