Matt Bitzer threw a four-hitter, and Zach Pidgeon and Ben Payton had RBI hits in the sixth inning as Oneonta Post 259’s Legion baseball team beat Binghamton Post 1645, 2-1, in the losers’ bracket final of the District Six Tournament on Wednesday at Conlon Field in Binghamton.

The Green Wave (23-16), who are the defending District Six champions, played a second game against winners’ bracket champion Vestal Post 89 on Wednesday night at Conlon Field. The game was not completed by press time. Oneonta needed to win Wednesday night’s game to force a decisive game at 6 p.m. Friday at Conlon Field.

Oneonta coach Mike Jester said getting a complete game out of Bitzer was key.

“He only threw 113 pitches (over nine innings),” Jester said of Bitzer (6-3), who struck out four and walked four. “I didn’t have to us my relievers at all. It was very important that Matt threw a complete game.”

Jester said Ben Moxley would pitch for Oneonta in the night game against Vestal.

“He had good command of his curveball,” Jester said. “He got ahead of most hitters, probably 80 percent of the time. He feasted on their undisciplined at-bats.”

The Green Wave broke through against losing pitcher John Kellar in the sixth inning. Moxley led off with a single off of Kellar, who struck out 10. David Wright then grounded into a fielder’s choice.

Pidgeon followed with a double to right-center. Wright barely beat the relay throw home to tie the score at 1. Payton then singled down the right-field line to make it 2-1. Oneonta nearly had another run as Peter Brunetta singled, but Payton was thrown out at the plate.

“Both of the plays at the plate were close,” Jester said.

Pidgeon finished with two doubles for Oneonta.
