Quinn Barnhart's bases-loaded single in the bottom of the eighth inning Wednesday gave Unatego a walkoff baseball victory as the Spartans beat visiting Spencer-Van Etten, 7-6, in a Section Four Class C Tournament opener.

The eighth-seeded Spartans (11-9) will visit top-seeded Thomas A. Edison (15-2) for a sectional quarterfinal at 4:30 p.m. Friday.

"We'll go and play hard," Unatego coach Frank Microni said of Friday's quarterfinal, which will be against the defending sectional champion.

Codie Nichols drew a one-out walk from losing pitcher Ryan Bunce in the eighth, then advanced to third on consecutive passed balls. Bunce intentionally walked Josh Lambrecht and Dan Shelton to load the bases for Barnhart, who followed with a hard grounder off the second baseman's glove to end it.

"It was hit hard," said Microni, who added Barnhart's grounder was ruled a hit.

Unatego rallied to tie the score at 6 with two runs in the sixth as Phil Youngs hit an RBI double and later scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Nichols.

Youngs finished 2-for-5 with two RBIs for Unatego, which matched No. 9 seed S-VE with eight hits.

Spartans starting pitcher Shelton struck out eight, walked three and gave up six runs on seven hits in five innings. Lambrecht followed with four strikeouts, no walks and one hit batter, holding the Panthers to one hit in three scoreless innings for the pitching victory.

"He came in and threw strikes," Microni said of Lambrecht.

Sean Burne had two hits for S-VE, which got a two-run double from Bunce and a double from Tyler Elleson.
