The Collegiate Water Polo Association selected Hartwick College sophomore Kamila Zakirova as its Western Division Rookie of the Year on Thursday.
A three-time CWPA Rookie of the Week, Zakirova has 49 points, 35 assists and 47 steals for the Hawks (26-11). Her season statistics include 12 goals, seven assists and seven steals in four games at the Roadrunner Invitational last month.
Teammates Sasha Freeborn and Lily Martinez also received recognition from the conference.
Freeborn made the First Team a year after receiving second-team accolades. This season, she leads the Hawks with 42 assists and is third on the team in goals with 53. Freeborn, who also has 39 steals, has 109 goals and 112 assists in a Hartwick uniform. The latter ranks eighth in program history.
Fellow junior Martinez joined Zakirova on the Second Team. The 2010 Rookie of the Year, Martinez has 39 goals, 29 assists and 28 steals this season. Overall, she has 93 goals, 115 assists (seventh in program history) and 138 steals.
Hartwick plays Notre Dame College in the first round of the CWPA Eastern Championships at 11:40 a.m. today in Providence, R.I. The winner will advance to play Maryland at 5 p.m. today.
Hartwick duo honored
Sophomore utility Jemma Dendy Young and junior goalie Haley Cox were recognized by the CWPA on Wednesday. Dendy Young earned Western Division Player of the Week and Cox received Defensive Player of the Week.
Dendy Young had four goals, one assist and three steals in an 11-7 win at Brown on Sunday en route to her second Player of the Week award this season. Cox had six saves and three steals against the Bears.
The SUNY Athletic Conference named Oneonta State freshman hurdler Rob Farrell its male Track Athlete of the Week. Farrell won the 110-meter hurdles in 15.49 seconds Saturday at the Cortland Classic. He also placed third in the 400 hurdles (55.67).
Farrell ran for O-State's winning 400 and 1,600 relays as well, the latter earning a school record of 3:15.25 that ranks seventh among NCAA D-III teams.
