Oneonta rolls over Norwich, 12-0, in season opener

CHERYL CLOUGH Oneonta's Bradley Jacobs dribbles away from a defender Wednesday during the Yellowjackets' season-opening win over Norwich. Jacobs scored a hat trick and had an assist for OHS.

Eight players scored as Oneonta began its campaign for a fourth consecutive section title with a 12-0 win over Norwich on Wednesday.

"We started the season earlier than usual. This is usually a scrimmage day," Oneonta coach Alex Brannan said. "I think this early start threw a lot of teams off. Truthfully, I don't think this is enough time to be ready."

While new rules decreasing the number of practices required before a team's first game may have bothered Norwich, Oneonta scored early and often. The Yellowjackets took a 4-0 lead at halftime before scoring eight more in the second half without allowing Norwich a shot or corner.

Junior Bradley Jacobs notched a hat trick and an assist off the bench to pace the offense. Senior Nate Kuhlmann and freshman Finley Oliver each scored two goals, with Kuhlmann also recorded an assist.

Matt Shultz tallied a goal and two assists, and Alex Bitterman scored once and assisted once. Tanner Russin and Cecilio Torres each had a goal, while Dylan Davi, Max Madej and Sam Moore each had an assist.

Oneonta (1-0) hosts Chenango Forks on Friday at 10 a.m.

Margaretville 191, Gilboa 193

Margaretville's Thomas Chairvolotti and Reese Chase of Gilboa provided the low scores for their respective teams Wednesday, but it was Chairvolotti who nabbed individual and team honors as the Blue Devils took a tight Delaware League match.

Chairvolotti totaled a 41 for the match's lowest round, and was followed by Justin Johnson's 46. Ryan McVitty and Connor Joedicke each shot 52 to fill out Margaretville's scoring positions.

Chase carded a 42 to finish second in the individual scores. Rob Rion shot 47 for Gilboa, while Keith Smith totaled a 48 and Ethan Halet finished in 56.

Hunter-Tannersville 191, Jefferson 226

Hunter-Tannersville continued to use its depth, placing all four scorers in a six-stroke range to defeat Jefferson.

Grady Glennon shot 45 to lead the Wildcats, while Kaeden Leach shot 46, Lyden Smith totaled a 49 and Ernie Briskey shot 51.

Seth Wade shot 49 to lead Jefferson, but it was a rare off day for a player that shot 37 in his last match, a win over Stamford at Stamford Golf Club.

"He's really been great so far, just hitting the ball well," Jefferson coach John Toroni said. "With the dry weather and no rain, the greens were lightning and we had a little trouble, but otherwise he was fine."

Evan Staroba followed with a 54 for Jefferson, while Kurt McMahon shot 61 and Lucas Pochily finished in 62 for the J-Hawks.

Jefferson visits Margaretville at Hanah Country Club on Tuesday.
