Cooperstown opened its softball season by spoiling the perfect start to Herkimer’s, scoring three runs in the sixth inning to win, 4-3, and drop Herkimer to a 1-5 record in a game played Friday at Herkimer.
Sophomore pitcher Natalie Brotherton played her first varsity game and earned the win. Hailey Seamon caught the entire game.
“Brotherton had a good game, and the defense played well behind her. They had a lot of nice plays, especially for playing their first game,” Cooperstown head coach Dave Bliss said.
Herkimer had more hits during the game with a 7-3 advantage, but the Hawkeyes defense locked down to hold on to the win. Kurstin Gay hit two doubles for Herkimer.
Piper Seamon, a Cooperstown sophomore, hit a two-run triple in the sixth. Kate Donnelly and Maggie Schuermann also contributed one RBI each.
Emily Jory and Marion Leskovar were the pitcher-catcher duo for Herkimer.
Cooperstown is scheduled to play Tuesday night at Sherburne-Earlville with a 4:30 start time.
Oneonta 8, Windsor 5
Ally Baker pitched a complete game and helped herself at the plate, hitting 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs as she led Oneonta to a win on the road versus Windsor on Friday.
“Baker only had two strikeouts and six walks today, but she controlled their hitters all afternoon, mixing speeds and hitting spots,” Oneonta head coach Randy Brockway said. “She really grinded out a well-played game on a cold afternoon.”
The Yellowjackets (4-0, 3-0 STAC) were down, 2-1, after three innings but made a comeback in the top of the fourth when they scored seven runs.
Baker and Meredith Smithling both had two hits in the inning. Smithling was 2-for-2 with a walk and a run scored.
Alexa Loucks also got in on the action with an RBI single and Rilie Falconio-Gray hit a double, knocking in two more Yellowjackets for a 8-2.
Kayli Rosencrans went 2-for-3 from the plate and had Windsor’s lone extra-base hit, a double in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Oneonta is scheduled to host Seton Catholic at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
