Unatego crushes Oxford in quarters

RYAN AMES | THE DAILY STARUnatego forward Maddie Wilsey dribbles around an Oxford defender during the second half of Saturday’s Section IV Class C section tournament quarterfinal round game at Unatego.

Hali Lucia and Paige McCoy powered No. 3 Unatego past No. 11 Oxford, 72-39, in the quarterfinal round of the Section IV Class C girls section tournament Saturday, Feb. 29 at Unatego.

Lucia and McCoy, both seniors, combined for 31 points for the Spartans in their victory over the Blackhawks.

McCoy managed 14 points while Lucia netted 17, with 15 of those coming from beyond the arc.

“They’re seniors, it’s their last game in this gym, it meant a lot to them, I’m sure, and I’m so happy for both of them and Mallory (Frazier), that we can go out on a note like that,” Unatego coach Bob Zeh said.

Frazier, the third senior on the roster, also saw some minutes on the court Saturday.

“Paige, it was her best game of her career, 14 points is big,” Zeh continued. “She got off to a good start and she had good shots.”

McCoy slotted five points in the first quarter, a team high, before Lucia led the Spartans’ 24-point second quarter with 11 points on three triples and two free throws.

“We talked about, when we execute and are smart on offense we can be a pretty good offensive team,” Zeh said. “We don’t always do that, however.”

Unatego outscored Oxford, 36-18, in the second half to close out the contest.

Meghan Perry recorded 14 points and Morgan Perry contributed 10 as the other Spartan scorers who reached double-digits.

Madalyn Barrows scored 13 points to pace the Blackhawks.

Unatego concluded with 26 field goals and a 14-for-21 mark from the foul line.

Unatego (19-2) will meet second-seeded Deposit/Hancock in the section semifinals Wednesday, March 4 at SUNY Cortland .
